Zuidknoop (South intersection)

ANTWERP, 2016

A CONVERSION OF A HIGHWAY JUNCTION INTO AN URBAN PARK

Knoop Zuid is a major highway intersection on the south side of Antwerp. The current intersection design does not fit European road safety and environmental legislation anymore and needs revision. Based on the design guidelines for the Green Singel Antwerp the masterplan aims for compacting the highway intersection allowing the city to use the newly generated space.

Verlengde Leien in an extended tunnel allows park sections to be connected to a large new city park. The Kolonel Silvertopstraat will be refurbished as a public transport corridor with a smooth connection to train station Zuid. The river dune landscape is fully accessible and reduces noise in the new park and the adjacent residential areas.
