A PARK DESIGN AND A LANDSCAPE VISION MASTERPLAN FOR THE SCANDINAVIA & WHITE NIGHTS, MOSCOW
FOREST PARK 2.0 is one of the main public spaces of the newly designed residential neighbourhood ‘Scandinavia & White nights’. Inspired by the modern Scandinavian way of living, the Park is designed as a coexistence of nature and contemporary human activities.
Our proposal is based on several fundamental principles
OPTIMISED EXISTING NATURE
Forest Park 2.0 is a park gently inserted into a forest. There are 1130 trees growing on site and we preserve 99% of them. To enrich the variety of trees we introduce new species, and we propose to plan around 217 trees on site. All the trees species are selected to survive Moscow climate and can be purchased in Russia. The existing pond is going to be revitalised to original glory and ecological quality. The stream valley we turn into rocky “canyon” that generates natural water flow towards the pond in case of excess stormwater. The groundcover of the park will be cleaned up to allow growing natural forest species of plants to bring back ecological and esthetical qualities of WILD NATURE instead of MAN MADE GREEN.
CATALYST OF THE NETWORK
Nature optimises its value both recreationally and ecologically when it becomes a part of a larger ecological network. Since Forest Park 2.0 is situated at the crossing of the Promenade and the Park Connection, it is designed to be smoothly connected both to adjacent surroundings and to destinations in large distances. All the parts of the park will be comfortable for walking, jogging biking, and accessible by disabled users. Instead of steps, all the topographical differences are being overcome by gentle ramps.
DIVERSE “ROOMS” IN A FOREST
Despite high density of preserved forest trees, Forest Park 2.0 offers a wide range of spaces and programs between trees as if they are a series of intimate “rooms” in the park. A variety of these “rooms” are prepared to welcome guests of any age group.
PROMENADE AS A GRAND ENTRANCE
The Promenade is the red carpet for pedestrian and cyclists of the Scandinavia & White nights, and it is also the main gateway to the Forest Park 2.0. The modern and rational character of the Promenade consists of comfortable pedestrian/cyclists passages gradually transforms it into the forest park atmosphere and forms the Square that is the gravity point of the Forest Park 2.0.
“The Loop” is a special architectural/landscape devise designed for the Forest Park 2.0. It accumulates a diverse public space elements/furniture and becomes a singular public furniture. Its shape was strictly determined to optimise the preservation of existing forest trees. Use of larch wood is dedicated not only for its soft appearance, comfortable texture but also for embracing the “Scandinavian” feel. The Loop is also where financial investment focuses, keeping the rest of park as a WILD NATURE - low cost & low maintenance yet lush and beautiful area.
Based on our previous experience in projects in Moscow, especially Skolkovo Gardens, we would like to propose materials and solutions that are economically feasible, yet can be customised to give the whole area of “Scandinavia” and “White Nights” unique character. From our practice with Russian manufacturers, we know the quality of available products and flexibility in the customisation of them.
How the public space will look like after several years depends on several factors. Most crucial one in Moscow climate is winter, with attached difficulties of snow removal & chemicals. To prevent damage to trees in public space, and street and public space planting we like to propose the attention on the street profile to accommodate such hazards.
