STRATEGIC VISION, MASTERPLAN AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN FOR ANTWERP EXPO WITHIN THE CULTURE PARK
Follow up of the commission for the Design Guide Lines Groene Singel Antwerp, Maxwan was commissioned to design the New Expo, part of the Culture Park of Antwerp. The design includes new Expo buildings (26.000m2), large scale parking (1500 cars), housing (30.000m2) and public amenities (3.000m2) as well as public space design.
The main ambition of the project is to create a top location for Antwerp within the green landscape structure of the city.
Different topics were researched to achieve this goal: program, street profiles, public space, ecology, traffic, logistics and parking.
The main program of the Cultural park of Antwerp is distributed along a ring, that becomes the main structural element of the masterplan. The ring connect together the two radials from the city centre and the front public space of each program: Singelplein, Colmar Restaurant square, Hotel Plaza front space and the new Expo square.
Street profiles and public spaces were rationalized to increase accessibility of inhabitants and expo visitors within the infrastructural network and to improve the overall quality of the neighbourhood.
A new parking building liberates the streets from street public parking improving pedestrian oriented connectivity.
Expo logistics and parking pockets overlap with sport facilities and public spaces to create flexible spaces able to adapt to Expo seasonal activities.
